Through the labs, I was able to put climate concepts to practice. Most labs have a hands on portion, which is typically focused on modeling a concept, and computer section, which focuses on data related to concepts from class. No previous lab experience is necessary but previous excel knowledge is very helpful for making graphs.
Ocean circulation and other mechanisms of climate systems
The different factors that influence how the climate works, how different types of climates are created, the impact of the ocean on the atmosphere and vice versa, how ccliamte change works, how it impacts other systems, etc..
I learned that I am not particularly interested in physics or chemistry as a field of study. I also learned that high school level understandings are much higher than I anticipated. As for content, I learned a lot about writing lab reports in tight timelines and persevering through many homework assignments that felt impossible. This class was also able to teach me about how to prioritize work time dedicated to the classes. Because of the sheer amount of work, I often prioritized those graded assignments over actually learning material in lecture and office hours, which felt somewhat wasteful.
The causes for climate and what is currently affecting climate.
Lots. Each teacher gave (about) weekly problem sets, which were fairly impossible. You are supposedly allowed to resubmit and resubmit them until you pass, but Gordon and Hays didn't do that. Nili and Gordon were incredibly harsh graders, expecting people in their first week dealing with their topics to understand and be able to produce (!!!!) formulas to solve them. Hays was better, but still a harsh grader. The midterm was uncurved so the average grade was like a C+/B-. The labs were due Tuesdays, with about 5 hours work to finish each labs work, and another 7-12 hours typing up the write up. If the reason it took so long was difficulty of material it would be one thing, but instead its basically hours and hours of busy work. They were graded really easily so most people got above a 85 on each of them, but it doesn't feel rewarding you have to spend so much time on them. Do NOT take this class to fulfill science requirement, really directed at Majors and fulfillment of E3B etc requirements. Also, the labs are much easier done with partners, even though you aren't assigned any. The only way to stay sane in the tedium is to find someone to talk to and do it with.

Lots and lots and lots. Give up your weekends. Do not take this to fulfill a requirement.
I learned a lot about climate systems from both ocean and air perspective.
I learned about how the ocean and atmosphere interact to create climate systems, how ocean circulation works, and the carbon cycle.
