Role of life in biogeochemical cycles, relationship of biodiversity and evolution to the physical Earth, vulnerability of ecosystems to environmental change; causes and effects of extinctions through geologic time (dinosaurs and mammoths) and today. Exploration of topics through laboratories, demonstrations, computer data analysis and modeling.
I learned about the fundamental units and functions of living things, and mostly about evolution and ecological interactions of species with each other/through time.
The course was split into three sections that really operated independently of each other. The first looked at macro-evolution, the second looked at different topics in micro-evolution and ecology, and the third is much more biochemistry based.

I learned a lot about environmental biology and chemistry as well. I thought the material in this class was fascinating, but it really should be split into 2 classes.
Lab was very useful as a supplement to lecture. It really helped cement some of the key concepts.
