What students said

Baerbel Hoenisch · 2026 · 2026

An introduction to oceanography and earth systems

Baerbel Hoenisch · 2026 · 2026

gained a general understanding of the ocean chemistry, biology, physics and geology.

Baerbel Hoenisch · 2026 · 2026

I learned the basics of Oceanography in terms of the way the oceans function, the life and how ecosystems function within and surrounding the ocean, how society interacts with and affects the ocean, and how the ocean tells us things about the history of the planet and its life.

Baerbel Hoenisch · 2026 · 2026

We learnt a lot about the ocean mainly focused on currents, winds, and organisms

Baerbel Hoenisch · 2026 · 2026

I learned a great deal about environmental as well as Biological factors in the ocean.

Baerbel Hoenisch · 2026 · 2026

In this course, what I learned in terms of knowledge, was so much information about the ocean -so much about it that I didn't even know was part of the ocean. I learned so much about the small components of the ocean that quite literally drive all the marine life. Additionally, it gave a bigger perspective on the damage that humans are doing to the ocean by the careless mannerisms that we have and how little regard we give to the planet earth. It also really placed into perspective how much the ocean does for us and how long back it goes.

Baerbel Hoenisch · 2026 · 2026

I learned about ocean circulation and how tides move. I also learned about different creatures in the ocean and how they survive in different parts of the ocean.

Baerbel Hoenisch · 2026 · 2026

I learned about the the close relationship the ocean and the atmosphere have, the effects of anthropogenic activities on the ocean, the different organisms that reside in different parts of the ocean, and more. Overall this course taught me the biology, chemistry, and physics of the ocean.

While this course doesn't directly pertain to my intended major, I chose to take this course as one of my science requirements based off of the description solely. However, now that the course is over, I have learned alot more relevant things than I first expected. Perhaps first and foremost, we talk about climate change, ocean acidification, weather patterns, climate, and how they are all interconnecting and volatile systems all on their own. What was most useful, however, was a project in which we worked to settle disagreements between different interest groups within the Arctic Circle. This session, and the skills that came from first learning about the science and then integrating the political and social, are invaluable and made this course mean so much more for non-STEM majors of all kinds.
