The most practical course I have taken at this largely theory-based school, I learned a great deal about the process of writing a script for Television, Film (long and short respectively) and for artistic/independent versus more mercantile pictures. This course was excellent, though I would qualify that as being largely due to my Professor - Derin Celik.
How to use screenwriting softwares, write scripts, build characters, worlds, stories.
This course strengthened my skills in screenwriting and taught me to look at the 8 sequence structure of films in order to inform the correct beats in my own stories. It also helped me learn how to critique other students writing.
- Basic elements and rules in screenwriting
Basics of screenwriting for narrative short films. Learned how to write in industry standard screenplay format with Final Draft 12 as well as how to structure a story with a beginning, middle, and end. Analyzed classmate's scripts and gave feedback in a workshop format. Watched various films, critiquing and analyzing various screenwriting styles.
I learned how to write more effective screenplays- what questions I should be asking myself about the story as I write, how to utilize dialogue and action to reveal information, how to structure a story arc. I also learned how to give more effective feedback for my peers.
I learned a lot of valuable knowledge regarding screenwriting and how to properly formulate and construct a well-rounded story. I also appreciated the valuable feedback, not only by the Professor, but also by the 5 other students in my class.
I learnt so much - I was new to screenwriting but I now really feel I have a grasp on both formatting and storytelling elements of the form.
