Derin Celik

The most practical course I have taken at this largely theory-based school, I learned a great deal about the process of writing a script for Television, Film (long and short respectively) and for artistic/independent versus more mercantile pictures. This course was excellent, though I would qualify that as being largely due to my Professor - Derin Celik.

First time taking a screenwriting class at all so getting to actual practice the process and get feedback was incredibly valuable

This was my first screenwritting class and it was wonderful introduction. I have learnt the 3 act struggle, TV pilot, and feature. This is a great class for the principles of screenwritting. It is also a great writers room experience.

I had no idea where to start with a script until this class. Anytime I started a project on my own, I would be so lost, but this course gave me clarity on structure and how to receive ad give feedback. What I appreciated the most was that the class was still my speed despite not being as seasoned as other writers.

I learned various screenwriting structure methods, formatting techniques, and writing tools. I gained an understanding of the differences between writing for TV, film, and short formats. I also learned how to brainstorm ideas effectively and how to use narrative devices to structure a coherent, engaging, and captivating story.

This was my first film course, besides intro and I would say it was successful. I learned the act of storytelling, the structure of films (act 1,2,etc), how to generate original ideas/brainstorming tips, and how features and tv series are conducted. All of these skills encouraged me in my own work, and taught me how to take a soft idea and create a story that I was proud of.

In terms of skills, I learned the proper way to write screenplays--format, structure, etc. I also gained valuable insight into the industry that I plan on pursuing. I learned how to develop a story's plot, tone, environment, and much more. I learned how to analyze film and television that allow me to develop my own ideas in interesting ways.

I learned so much about screenwriting and giving feedback in this class. My teacher offered some brainstorming techniques, but also how to think about writing feature films and TV the way they are written in the industry. Derin helped clarify some seemingly mystical aspects of screenwriting.
