Such a fun and insightful class. Professor Gates is so knowledgeable on the nuances and history of Reality Television and is also just a very kind and fun professor. One of my favorite classes at Columbia!

Prof. Gates' class is a wonderful introduction to film studies, with great screenings and in depth discussions on all essential aspects of film. Most of the instruction focused on how to interpret, analyse, understand, and criticize films and compare them to each other.
As it is an intro course I learned a lot of new film terminology, techniques, and practices. I watched films I hadn't seen before and I learned how to critique and analyze film.
Learned about the basic categories of film making and began to learn more complex theoretical things later into the semester.
Essentially everything that I know about Film and Media Studies now is due to this course. - .
