Film (Sch Of The Arts) · Columbia University
This course strengthened my skills in screenwriting and taught me to look at the 8 sequence structure of films in order to inform the correct beats in my own stories. It also helped me learn how to critique other students writing.
My voice as trans screen writer and that my story deserves to been heard and seen.
I learned how to break down a film into its eight sequences and how to structure a story in those beats, and how to turn a concept into a compelling film (or at least the start of one). Definitely a little more geared towards people and students already more experienced in film and filmmaking than I was...
I learned how to apply a concept of creating an eight sequence structure when writing a screenplay. I learned how to use different techniques to drive my story and keep the audience entertained.
This course taught me how to be a better screenwriter, as well as how to better analyze a film's main plot points and apply that to my own writing. Coming into this class with little experience, I was unsure of what to expect. I may have just gotten lucky, but my class was filled with individuals who truly did want to better each other's work. It felt like a true writers' room, and for that, I am forever grateful.
This course was instrumental in sharpening my skills as a screenwriter. This class pushed me to write more and meet my goals. I feel more skilled as a writer than before I took the class.
What I learned in terms of knowledge many things come to mind, among them were, defining an inciting incident, and a midpoint, and their importance within a script. With regards to skill, I got a little better at writing with a deadline, we were encouraged to write to develop our stories, rather than just to pursue a grade, which helped to relive my writers block.
This class is great if you're just starting out and have prior experience writing screenplays. It will help you get a good foundation to operate out of.
My only recommendation is that, I would have liked to have had a partner through out the class to discuss my work with.
If you want to develop your fundamental screenwriting skills, learn how to receive critiques of your work and give critiques then I would highly recommend this course. You will definitely get out of it what you put in to it, and you will be held accountable for that.
