New Media Art · Film (Sch Of The Arts)
I think this course was quite fun in its diversity in reference materials. I definitely was not familiar with a lot of the formats aside from VR and some Steam-based games, which were quite fun to get to play in an academic context.
about "new" media and what kind of analysis/understanding we have or we are developing
I got a broad survey of the field of New Media studies. I picked up the names of some of the important scholars, got a few new theoretical frames in my academic toolbox, and got to experience some of the important pieces of art that are driving the field.
This class was mainly a history lesson on the various forms and works of media art. We also got to put this into practice in a final project.
I learned so much - about new media theories but also about platforms and ways to create new media art. It was a very fulfilling class, especially thanks to the papers which invited us to put into practice theories for our own creations.
A neat balance of a detailed and overarching view of new media art today.
I think I would mainly recommend this class to the film majors who are interested in other forms of digital storytelling or even computer science majors who may be interested in implementing their skillset into the arts. 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Fall 2021 Course: FILMGU4951_001_2021_3-NEWMEDIAART : FILMGU4951_001_2021_3 - NEW MEDIA ART Instructor: Lance Weiler
This course, especially with Regina, was very much about New Media Art, capital A. It was seriously a treat to be in a class with a current curator who has expert knowledge and a practical background in the field. Both Regina and Lance were fantastic.
I learnt a lot about different interesting theories and concepts emerging in new media art as well as different ways of thinking about them, along with exposure practical examples and games
I learned a lot about the history of media art and new media art. I learned different technologies, forms of art, and theories related to New Media art.
