Maria Luisa Gozzi

very standard italian class, but Maria Luisa is so kind and funny and I really felt like I learned a lot.

Learned an entire overview of the language! Learned more grammar than I have in any Italian course before — essentially every tense and mood. Also the little quirks of the language. Prof Gozzi was really good at getting into the nitty gritty and writing everything on the chalkboard I feel like I learned so much! One weakness is that there was little motivation for me to go and look back at my corrected work. Also I always wish there was more conversation involved. However I was so astounded by how much I learned, Prof Gozzi makes these little Google Docs and finds these flowcharts and makes everything so colorful and easy to understand (in terms of conjugations, etc). Gozzi is very passionate about her students, she cares a lot. She started bringing in snacks towards the end of the semester! Really is a very attentive teacher, she remembers everything. Is a very good teacher and you can tell she puts a lot of effort into her lesson plans—she makes everything very easy to understand. However, she'll also call you out if you're not paying attention, which made me feel really guilty. I did feel really bad because she would ask me if the class was boring me lol — which it wasn't, I just have an issue with falling asleep in class. She'll also make you participate of course — this is a class you have to be 100% present for in person! But that's great for learning a language. Overall…

Professor Gozzi was great! She's a really good teacher and was always checking in to make sure we understood everything. She always says she loves "stupid" questions and she never made anyone feel bad about being confused about something, even if we'd gone over it a lot before. Also, she's very aware that 2 hours is a long class period: we get a five-minute break in the middle of class and she encourages us to stretch or chat, and we would play Kahoot or watch educational videos pretty frequently. In my opinion, this class is totally doable as long as you do all the homework and dedicate about another hour or so a week to studying the vocabulary. It was also a really fun class and it seemed like Professor Gozzi really enjoyed teaching us and getting to know us.

Great teacher! She makes class really interactive and fun. She uses Youtube and Pop Culture a lot which makes class really easy to get through despite the massive amount of work you do. I felt like I learned more Italian in one semester than all the foreign language I took through high school.

This was a great class. Gozzi is entertaining and hilarious and always keeps the class interested. I feel that I have truly learned a lot of Italian, and although there is a TON of material to go through, I never felt too rushed. I would definitely recommend this course, even though it is a big time commitment. Gozzi creates a nice class atmosphere and everyone gets to know each other, which is nice. Intensive elementary is well worth the workload, and is a good investment of your time.

Very good teacher. I was amazed at how well she controlled the class and kept us interested and entertained, especially for the first half of the semester. It seemed as though the second half, when class motivation was lacking, she was unable to lift everyone's spirits all the time. However, for those that wanted to be there, she was always extremely helpful and made the material clear. You can't go wrong with Maria Luisa, people. You won't regret having chosen her.

With all seriousness, Maria Luisa Gozzi is perhaps the living, breathing antithesis of competent instruction. For instance, on the first day of class, she wrote EVERY VERB TENSE on the board in completely illegible handwriting (consuming 2 hours) -- not the best way to introduce students with LITTLE TO NO KNOWLEDGE OF ITALIAN to the language (or her handwriting--which did not improve). Class assignments and discussions seem to be as random as the number of meatballs in the Jay Hall cafeteria's unpalatable spagetti. Not to mention as PAINFUL.

If you already know Italian and really need to get your language credit done, this is a nice course to do it with.
