I learned about ethnomusicology as a new way of thinking and studying.
Non-western music, international cultures and influences.
I was opened to so many new perspectives in this course. I learned how to read an article regarding a musical topic, and then be able to "listen" to it and further unpack the underlying musical meanings.
I learned lots of different music histories from different places, peoples, and times. I learned how to compare them to one another and think critically about music and what it meant socially or politically. I also learned how to connect the sound of the music to its meanings.
I appreciate the different cultures and backgrounds that we explored in class and through the readings.
I had the opportunity to improve my writing skills in this course.
I learned about music from different cultures and regions of the world and their anthropological/socioeconomic implication of these forms of music.
the way music not only interacts with culture but creates it in the form of so many minority perspectives such as black, south asian, native, and muslim communities.
How to evaluate and understand music through different lenses including migration, gender and sexuality, ecology, and politics.
I learned how to understand and interpret musics from all different cultures and time periods.
