Thomas Wetmore · 2025 · 2025

a break down and more thorough understanding of the sonic world and how to flesh out the innate underlying meanings of everything to do with sonic history.

Ehichung Chung · 2021 · 2021

I have learned things that I did not expect to learn coming to class the first day: I have learned to analyze East Asian texts from both the wardrobe and the narnia levels. In other words, I have realized that there are almost always negative spaces behind the east asian culture (both classics and music). While the surface, wardrobe aspects are comfortable places where one can enjoy oneself, there will always be the narnia aspect where one are confronted with uncomfortable questions that makes them think more deeply about the issues at hand and their lives at large.

Hicham Chami · 2021 · 2021

All discussion-based class based on the readings assigned for each class. Chami's class not only focuses on major East Asian countries (China, Japan, and Korea), but also heavily focuses on other Asian countries (Tibet, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc.) and music by minority groups.

Laina Dawes · 2026 · 2026

I learned a variety of concepts that are used in ethnomusicology and due to the scope of different countries and cultures covered, gained an ability to closely examine, analyze and compare how different music genres are related to certain social, economic and political issues within a country. I learned how to talk about music in an academic manner, and gained some music-related vocabulary.

Daniel Ferguson · 2024 · 2024

How to evaluate and interogate East Asian music effectively. This skill has expanded my understanding of music and its cultural aspects. I now feel more confident in discussing and applying East Asian musical elements in various contexts.

Rachel Chung · 2008 · 2008

Professor Chung is the best professor I have ever had. THE BEST. If you have a chance to take her class, take it. The things that you learn from her class will continue to impact your life long after you graduate. At least they have, for me. Some people say that she assigns a lot of work, but I enjoyed her class so much that most of the work didn't feel like work at all. Trust me, even if you're not interested in the topic just take any class she's teaching.

Thomas Wetmore · 2025 · 2025

I learned about the characteristics and instrumentation of music in Asia and in the Asian diaspora.

Ehichung Chung · 2021 · 2021

Different genres of East Asian music, the ethos behind the music, and the different philosophies undergirding music's function as it was perceived in East Asia.

Hicham Chami · 2021 · 2021

Various genres of East Asian music spanning Korea, China, Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan and others.
