We learned an amazing amount about the historic origins and cross-cultural exchange of traditional music in East Asia. All the way up to the present when Western influences are mingling with traditional forms and creating new types of music.
I learned so much about practices and cultures that I never even knew existed, and became much better at being able to compare and contrast them to my own musical experiences.
Learned about some of the music originating from or inspired by Western and Southern Asia, with plenty of useful cultural context.
I became much more aware of the non-Western genres of music. We covered Middle Eastern and Asian music traditions that gave me greater insight and depth on the tones and textures of non-western music traditions. I learned how to listen with an open ear and analyze sound more critically.
I learned about musical styles, traditions, and culture from the MENACASA region.
