I learned about the characteristics and instrumentation of music in Asia and in the Asian diaspora.

the way music not only interacts with culture but creates it in the form of so many minority perspectives such as black, south asian, native, and muslim communities.

I learned how music and cultures are intertwined, but also that our western methods of constraining the meaning of music into something that we can understand within our framework can be harmful to the original meaning of the music.

Music as a societal construct/ cultural object. Music around the world. Music as political and social tool.

I just wouldn't recommend it because there wasn't a lot of participation, anyone who spoke up was probably someone who knew a lot about music already, and it didn't feel like a safe environment to ask basic, ground level music questions. Applications of sociology and relating them to phenomenons and greater debates, patterns, occurrences in music and the study of its history, present and future. Ethnomusicology- learned what that meant first day, and you'll hear it almost every day afterwards.

This course makes explicit the connection between music and its role in culture. Drawing upon ethnomusicological thought, the course addresses different types of music from around the world and how this music is impactful or tied to other aspects of society. This course challenged many of the long-held assumptions I had about music and provided valuable insight on how I can approach music in the future.

there is a good chunk of reading and writing in the course.
