Alessandra Ciucci

I really loved Professor Ciucci's class. She is incredibly knowledgable and seems to genuinely care about teaching and her students. She's also very kind and brought us all coffee and tea during our final exam. The only thing is that sometimes it feels like she will express her own personal opinion and teach it as fact, rather than approaching the material from an unbiased standpoint... but let's be honest, pretty much every professor does that. Overall, a great course and enjoyed learning from her, biases and all.

I highly recommend taking any of Prof. Ciucci's classes. She's so lively, sweet and makes the content engaging to all. She tries to make her class less lecture and more discussion, however it ends up becoming more lecture. I'm not complaining as I really enjoyed her lectures.

Professor Ciucci is a wonderful person. She personally made time to meet with each of us in the class over Zoom in an attempt to restore some degree of classroom normalcy. That being said, the class she taught made absolutely no sense. She's got this weird thing about not letting you listen to the music before class. What's that all about? Each discussion felt like a fever dream, with little to no direction. Basically, the same 5 students gave disconnected answers, and then she spoke the rest of the time. Wouldn't recommend taking Topics with her.

Ethno prosem 1 and 2 are mandatory for Ethnomusicology doctoral students. Dr. Murer is a good professor and made the course interesting. I was opened to so many new perspectives in this course. I learned how to read an article regarding a musical topic, and then be able to "listen" to it and further unpack the underlying musical meanings.

Essays are not graded harshly. I learned musical terms and concepts and gained both an historical and contemporary perspective on many aspects of music, and was exposed to many intriguing examples of non-western music, academic writing

This course taught me to think more deeply about the music I consume, specifically about the purpose for its creation, its intent, and its reception.
