Elementary German I · Germanic Languages
Basic conversations in German, present, past, and other tenses of speech. Some vocabulary pertaining to everyday items in our lives. Pop culture of Germany.
I learned very basic conversational German.
I learned a remarkable amount of German and how to communicate effectively through both writing and speaking. Professor Parks teaches the class very practically instead just resorting to whatever the textbook has to say.
We covered about a chapter every 1~1.5weeks and for every chapter, there are 1-2 assignments, a test, and at most one composition. It's really manageable and he's nice about workload too.
Standard workload for german, about 3 hours a week if you're in a rush.
Really manageable--one or two exercises due per class, four short compositions throughout the semester (the grade for which is the average of your first and corrected copies), small tests every other week, and a final (with oral). Standard for beginning languages.
test every other week (very specific review sheet given the day before), 5 short essays, midterm, final
5 (150 words ) "Essays" throughout semester Homework for every class (probably took an hour or two each time) 5 Exams + Final
The workload is much lighter compared to other classes, despite German being a more difficult language for English speakers than perhaps the Romance languages. Still, the work is not overly difficult, and is challenging enough to keep the mind engaged without frustration. True mastery of course takes daily practice, but even the more casual learner will do well in this course.
Assignment workload is light to moderate. It is a language course, so it requires you to spend a decent amount of time practicing speaking and listening at home. Quizzes are given every other week, but they aren't anything crazy. Reviews and guides for quizzes and oral assessments are really helpful. There are a handful of presentations you give to the class, but they are fun if you make them! Grading is lenient, but always try your best and put in the effort.
