What students said

Maiken Kaczmar · 2023 · 2023

I learned basic German: speaking, reading, and writing.

Xuxu Song · 2025 · 2025

I became way more comfortable with understanding spoken german, before this course listening to german it always felt to fast to understand, but I can tell I have improved a lot. I also feel like I learned all the basics of German grammar so that when reading or listening to german, it is no longer mysterious to me why endings are how they are, etc.

Simona Vaidean · 2023 · 2023

I definitely improved my grammar within this class. The amazing part about it, is that I wasn’t even aware of how much I was improving until I look back at where I started this semester.

Romney Walker Wood · 2024 · 2024

Workload was very manageable, and office hours were helpful

Iloe Ariss · 2023 · 2023

The assignments are pretty frequent--usually one homework assigned per class, and the class meets 3 times a week. That said the homeworks aren't intense at all and can be completed in an hour or less. There are some tests but Iloe gives you everything you need to know. The classwork prepares you well.

Michael Lipkin · 2012 · 2012

Daily manageable assignments, Test once every other week, No Midterm, and a Final.

Hannes Bajohr · 2012 · 2012

Standard elementary german workload. Biweekly quizzes and chapter tests and one departmental final. He gives you lots of extra credit opportunities.

Sybille Rinkert · 2023 · 2023

I learned how to communicated effectlively.

Jutta Schmiers-Heller · 2026 · 2026

Love of my life. I adore Jutta — her German class made this otherwise intolerable semester much brighter. Such an amazing, kind and genuinely interesting to learn from Professor. One of the best I have ever had at Columbia.

Samuel Spinner · 2005 · 2005

Sam is the definition of laid back, and yet you'll still learn German! He runs a fun, low-stress class, with a good deal of amusing class interaction and discussion. I'd definitely recommend him for Elementary German.
