I learned higher level music theory, improved my classical composition skills, and also learned quite a few interesting ways to apply different theories (including non-musical theories, which was very fun!) to music.

Knar Abrahamyan · 2025 · 2025

So much!!! I feel like what we learned is enough to analyze harmony in most tonal pieces. While most examples we studied were from common-practice period, we also had several lectures on jazz and many principles we learned are applicable to basically any genre of tonal music. As a final project we had to compose a piece and we were free to choose any genre, which was really exciting! While composition wasn't the main focus of this class, it definitely helped me to grow as a composer.

Galen DeGraf · 2026 · 2026

Mediant and submediant chords, phrases, periods and sentences, tonicization and modulation.

Peter Susser · 2022 · 2022

I really would love if it included theory specific to non-classical music, especially pop, jazz, and experimental. It's good if you're a music major or want to compose, and despite my desire to run far far away from classical music, I learned A LOT. It was a very useful course!

Galen DeGraf · 2026 · 2026

I would only recommend it if Professor Degraf were teaching the course.

To someone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of music theory and the structuring principles of Western music.

Galen DeGraf · Spring 2023 · 2026

There are lots of test, quizzes, and assignments and in some cases it seems to be a lot more work than a 3 credit class is actually worth. 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Spring 2023 Course: MUSIUN2319_001_2023_1-MUSICTHEORYII : MUSIUN2319_001_2023_1 - MUSIC THEORY II Instructor: Galen DeGraf
