I learnt about 13th and 9th chords, how we define genres, movie and video game music, set theory neoreimannian transformations and more.

Because this class was given virtually, it was harder to incorporate recorded or live music. Breakout rooms and being able to share screen with music notation software was helpful, but I sometimes ran into issues with not being able to hear shared sound. We did in-depth units on Neo-Riemannian Theory, Genre, Rhythm, Set Theory, Film Music, Video Game Music. We composed and analyzed music regularly.

Some of the things we covered were Neo-Riemannian Transformations, Quartal/Quintal harmony, genre definitions, film music and video game music.

As long as students are prepared to commit to the workload of the class, I think that it’s a course really worth taking!
