Georg Haas · 2024 · 2024

This course serves as an excellent resource for broadening one’s perspective on diverse cultural traditions and the use of temperament systems. It explores a substantial body of artists and composers who employed innovative temperament systems beyond the European 12-tone temperament. Georg Friedrich Haas’ expertise, both as a composer and a connoisseur, provided a richly informed foundation for class discussions.

Georg Haas · 2024 · 2024

About the analysis of composers such as Scelsi, Stein, Wyschnegradsky, joined by other examples of music beyond twelve tone temperament and about interesting student presentations.

Georg Haas · 2024 · 2024

I thoroughly enjoyed the topics covered in this course and the assignments, which allowed us to compose pieces in various systems. Through presentations, we had the opportunity to share our interests with fellow students and explore the diverse cultural applications of temperament systems and tunings from around the world.

Georg Haas · Fall 2024 · 2024

This was an overall great experience in terms of the understanding music that is beyond twelve tone temperament both in the perspective of music theory, and within the perspective of performers, as the class has discussions on various recordings of interesting performers. There are also composition assignments which are fun. 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Fall 2024 Course: MUSIGR8240_001_2024_3-MusicBeyond12ToneTemperamentI : MUSIGR8240_001_2024_3 - Music Beyond 12 Tone Temperament I Instructor: Georg Haas
