He's just a chill guy. Sometimes his grading can be harsh (imo) but he is willing to help and is super nice. The labs are also pretty fun and you get to learn a bunch of cool techniques.

I was worried since upper level labs can be difficult but Dr. Sturley is so nice. He is amazing. I never felt scared or like I would be made of fun of or scorned for making a mistake (cough chem lab). He is very supportive and so interesting. Dr. Sturley is super flexible and will move exams or essay due dates for any reason. I will say that occasionally class goes over time, which is a lot as this is a lab. I was always tired coming out of the lab but never drained like in my past labs. He is very informative while being low stress. A fun class with fun experiments, there is still work. do not expect to just never do anything for lab but he is less stressful experience than the other labs I have been in, and does not grade arbitrary things.

I was a little worried about the class because normally JJ Miranda teaches it, but the class overall was very chill. Most of the time, we did not have any work outside of just coming to class. I didn't learn a lot about the field of microbiology, but I learned a lot of fun facts to share with my friends. Attendance is not required and I missed 1/6 of the classes and was completely fine. I'm not sure it's possible to get below an A- if you turn everything in. Sturley is such a sweet man even if he is super disorganized and takes forever to hand back assignments.

The worst professor I have had at Columbia or Barnard. Do not take. Seriously don’t know why he continues to be hired. He must be keeping someone’s secrets.

BIOL BC1501 · Spring 2025 · 4/5

I don't know why Professor Sturley has bad reviews. He's a sweet British man who is incredibly chill/lenient with grading, and honestly pretty funny sometimes. He truly loves biology and talking about science, and I had a good time in his lab section.

BIOL BC3303 · Fall 2024

No exams, presentations, esssays and lab work

BIOL BC3320 · Fall 2023 · 3/5

Currently in the course but Sturley is very nice. He's willing to move around test dates and is happy giving everyone good grades on essays. The class doesnt seem to be curved. Have yet to have an exam though

BIOL W3041 · Spring 2017 · 2/5

Do not take this class. Yes, the stuff covered is interesting. But he is not a teacher. He doesn't know how to teach. Wait til Prof Snow comes back. Please.

BIOL BC1501 · Spring 2025

Pretty low. Just show up to the lab every week and do your work. Pre-lab is probably like 2-3 hours, which you can do the day before your lab takes place. The hardest part for me was the lab exam because they will sometimes throw in trick questions, but just make sure you know everything on the lab manual and in-class worksheets.

2 midterms, never written by himself. He recycles old material.
