I learnt how to engage and analyse information through a feminist ear. I learnt how to be open minded and engage with different philosophic works in a kinder environment, open for questions and explanations.
I learned various authors that are engaged in feminist work, and the breadth of topics and areas of study that feminist studies can intersect with. I also developed reading skills for tackling difficult texts, using emotion and personal connection to engage with philosophical works that may be too daunting and challenging to fully understand.
I gained critical insight and analysis into works by Irigaray, Musser, Levinas, etc and learned to apply theory to quotidian, material life. I learned a lot about myself (in association with concepts we studied in class), about writing and community journaling, and was able to listen to Professor Aumiller's beautiful words in our classes!
I learned the true meaning of feminist theory in this class. That it is not only a word or a theory but a practice and that feminist theory does not mean just to be an expert in feminist writings but that experience is just as valid as expertise. I really enjoyed the non-hierarchal way that Prof. Aumiller teaches, and I found each reading she gave us to be incredibly valuable. She challenged us to read dense pieces yet supported us by allowing us to lead classroom conversations and ask questions.

The ability to close read texts- for every reading I truly felt like we did such a deep dive in class to discuss the author, their writing, and how it impacts us/society today. Aumiller creates an environment where everyone truly can share their own stories, that being said I feel like I gained more perspective through this course than any other at Columbia.
I was able to learn about a variety of scholars and their through on different feminist topics from ethics to sex to queer politics and gained new insights because of it.
I am better able to read analytically and have more mindfulness while reading texts and considering my positionally.
I think everyone should take this class.
