Too much reading. Hardly anyone completed all of it. About 6 homework assignments; only have to do 5. Some extra credit opportunities. Poster presentation that counts as a midterm. Final w/ multiple choice and long-answer. Manageable, but kind of a lot.

There were four homework assignments, each assigned later than they were supposed to. She also did not give us adequate time to finish them; meaning, even though she assigned them late, we had less time than we were supposed to to complete them. There was also a final research presentation. She refused to provide rubrics for any of the assignments (barring the final project) even after numerous students expressed confusion about the requirements and expectations. She never answers her emails and refuses to meet with students for office hours, but instead, redirects students to the TAs, who are equally as unhelpful. The TAs tell you something during office hours and then take off points for putting that on your assignment. To be fair though, I think they were as confused as we were, at times. The grading expectations are incredibly inconsistent and make absolutely no sense whatsoever, and Prof. RJY treats this class like an upper-level WGSS course. Homeworks 1-3 took HOURS to complete. Seriously, I could have focused my time on more important things. It was also a shot in the dark doing the homework because, like I said, we had 0 idea what the grading expectations were. And the final research presentation took me literally an entire day to complete.

I expected more from this class. The topics were interesting, Becs is charasmatic and funny, but somehow, despite always completing the reading, this class left me confused. I left it with a pretty good grade but instead of feeling like I had a deeper knowledge of the many issues in women's health, I felt like I had heard a lot of terms and themes and ideas instead of a firm grasp of the material. All in all, I am glad that I took it because I had not expected to ever take a women's studies class and I do feel that some parts of the class really provided insight. I just wish it had been a little more solid. Otherwise: The guest lecturers are great; very informative and clear and come with Powerpoints Becs can be somewhat disorganized but she is so great as a person It was clear that most people did not do the reading on a daily basis--she once proved this to us by giving a pop quiz

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS IT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. The only good thing I can comment on are the assigned readings because it was the only source I learned any information from. I have never had a course fail to meet my expectations more. The professor repeatedly started class 20 minutes late, which is incredibly disrespectful considering it starts at 8:40 and we have all made the effort to make it to class on time; not to mention that attendance is required, and we were threatened by the professor that if we arrive more than a few minutes late we will be marked absent. She canceled class less than an hour before it was supposed to start, and switched to a zoom format 10 minutes before class was supposed to begin. This is supposed to be an introductory level course to instill curiosity and interest for students thinking about a WGSS major, but she has probably turned many off from it. She is condescending and rude to her TAs and students, barking demands at the TAs to do grunt work. Luckily, I am majoring in an unrelated field, so I will never have the displeasure of being in a class with this professor ever again. I even had to pass/fail this class because I am worried I will get an unsatisfactory grade. I would absolutely NEVER recommend this class to anybody at all.

some homeworks, online quizzes, midterm 'poster' presentation, and final. she gives a comprehensive study guide for the final.

There were 4 homework assignments spread out through the semester, a midterm research proposal for your final project (arguably the easiest assignment), and a final project. The final project was split into two parts – a poster/zine/podcast and a presentation. However, because she's disorganized, these homework assignments were assigned at the last minute with less than a week to complete. Our third homework assignment and midterm research proposal were haphazardly assigned a week apart just days before spring break. The turnaround time for the grading wasn't bad, but the TAs were especially harsh graders, often nitpicking your arguments and punishing your grade for it. There were about 2-3 readings for each class and while they weren't terribly long, Jordan-Young will know if you haven't read them and ridicule the class for it.

This class is a prime example of why people consider women studies to be a joke. I took this class after sitting in on 2 lectures and being impressed with Prof. Young. When I decided to take it I know IÂ’d be made fun of. I heard from almost everyone I knew - youÂ’re taking a class in the Barnard womenÂ’s studies department?! My response was, the class is a serious epidemiology class using women and their relationship to the healthcare system as a case study. I ATE my words. This class was a boring waste of time. There are maybe 2 lectures that have interesting material. Everything else – you know or should know. There was a visiting lecture by one of the barnard deans in which we were asked – “does everyone know what DNA is?” I am NOT kidding. Other classes included sobbing – sharing your experiences psychobabble waste of my time. In one class we were told to spend 15 minutes reflecting on our 1st gynecology exam. The next 20 minutes were spent sharing different peoples stories. It is not appropriate in an academic setting to spend time like that. I guess it was good there were no guys in the class. You might be asking yourself – why did I go to lecture if it was such a waste of time? Lecture is required. Prof. Young passes around a sign in sheet. In terms of work and other requirements. Prof Young was so vague that nobody quite knew what was going on. When we were told…

Stay away from this class and this professor – I don't say those words lightly. Advertised as 1000-level course, you'd expect that the class would take it easy on you and give you opportunities to make mistakes, but also learn. Wrong. Those were my expectations going into the class, but as the semester progressed, it became clear that Prof. Jordan-Young and TAs were more interested in giving you subpar grades for, what she deemed as, an incomplete, shallow understanding of the material she taught in class. She is disorganized and condescending. This attitude often discouraged people from speaking up in lecture and as such, she admitted to not being above cold-calling on people in class. I will concede by saying that this class was at 8:40am and that might've contributed to the overall quietness in lecture, but do with that what you will. I'm sure she's a lovely person outside of the classroom, but if my experience is at all any consolation, don't take this class with her. It's advertised as a WGSS class, but it's better off being a 3000-level or 4000-level public health class on women.

fairly light. There is a lot of reading that you don't have to do but some of it is really interesting. there is one poster presentation instead of a midterm which is a lot easier than people thought it would be. she just wanted somthing really simple and i think that confused a lot of people. the final was also not very hard. she gave like 3 homework assignemnts that were all fairly simple and short.

I thought that this class was going to be more about health problems that women experience but it was more about how their place in society impairs their health which i found really disappointing. Also, she spends each class on a different topic so you cover so many topics superficially and then she expects you to know tem all for hte final. the class seems a lot more intimidating than it actually is though. I barely did anything in that class and managed to pull off an A. She also gives a comprehensive study guide for the final with everything you need to know on it. Overall I thought this class was really intersting but very one-sided. She actually states in the beginning of the course that the material we will be learning is from a strictly feminist perspective so that kind of gets annoying sometimes because some of the information feels more like perspective than actual fact.
