Intermed. Portuguese II · Latin American And Iberian Cultures
I learned so much in this course. We specifically covered many grammar subjects, but we interspersed writing / speaking skills with cultural knowledge. That was very valuable to me because it made for an immersive experience in the course. We had many helpful discussions, often changing course to discuss a current event or politics. This was helpful because we were able to learn (through practice) vocabulary that we will likely use in the future.
I developed my Portuguese listening, speaking, and writing abilities. Specifically, we focused on the use of the subjunctive, composite verb forms, and important preposition and connectors phrases and words. We also learned about Brazilian culture.
This is a fantastic class to make proficient Portuguese speakers much better! However, you must be willing to put in the work to improve. Ana Paula gives you all of the tools, but you need to commit to studying and completing assignments and going after every opportunity to practice. IF you have a desire to improve, this class will be your best tool!
If a student is interested in better their Portuguese abilities after having completed the lower intermediate levels, this course is the next step to doing so before accessing advanced-level coursework. 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Fall 2021 Course: PORTUN2102_001_2021_3-Intermed.PortugueseII : PORTUN2102_001_2021_3 - Intermed. I learned about Brazilian culture: music, politics, sports, communities, etc. As well as grammar, improved my writing skills, refined my speaking skills, and learned how to speak more conversationally.
Such an intimate and one-of-a-kind experience to have in a language class!
I learned a lot of Portuguese, Brazilian culture, and cultures from other Portuguese speaking countries. We had a lot of conversations, so I improved both my speech and my writing skills through the assignments we had throughout the week. Highly recommend the course for those who are interested in learning Portuguese from any skill level!
I learned both casual and sophisticated Brazilian Portuguese grammar, vocabulary and syntax rules. More importantly, I also learned about significant components of Brazilian culture that have expanded my horizons to be a more engaged world citizen and critical thinker. Some salient skills both acquired and developed in this course are communication, collaboration, autonomy, leadership and perseverance.
Ana is fantastic, the class is fun, you learn a lot, and is pretty light workload compared to other language classes, and because of that I learned the most from this language class than any other language class I've taken before.
With minimal course work that is actually useful rather than busy work, learning a new language becomes far more manageable and fun. It fulfils requirements in a way that is not taxing on your energy or time, but rather is very efficient. Aside from that, the atmosphere is always positive and light-hearted. The grading is fair and assignments are evenly spread out. 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Spring 2023 Course: PORTUN2102_001_2023_1-Intermed.PortugueseII : PORTUN2102_001_2023_1 - Intermed.
