I learned how to compose for a woodwind quintet (the instruments change each semester that the course is taught--course description does not change FYI!!) Came in without composing experience, but would recommend having a bit of music background, familiarity with reading music notes and what harmonies sound good together, musical rhythms...

Opportunity to compose in a class-setting --- less focused on formulaic composition methods and allowed me to explore compositional areas of interest. Loved learning from real cellists during lecture.

I learned a lot about how to compose new music, and learned a lot about musical techniques that I didn't know before.

I would recommend the course overall, but probably depends on the person.

From a technical view, I learned how to compose for different instruments and learned some extended techniques. But more importantly, I started paying more attention to the sound itself, to texture, timbre, etc, and was introduced to new interesting styles of composition. In terms of perspective, it became a bit clearer to me what kind of composer I want to be.

We didn't really learn how to compose but instead we composed, got feedback, and the cycle continued.

I learned about composition techniques for the cello. I learned about the cello and about how to notate a score for the cello.

This was a great class! Would definitely recommend to anyone wishing to further expand their compositional skills. The instructor is very open to new ideas and will not force you to compose in a certain style.
