MUSI UN2030

This course explores the variety of ways people have used music to describe, inscribe, symbolize, and editorialize their Jewish experience. Diverse musical experiences will serve as a window to address wider questions of identity, memory, dislocation, and connections to New York's dynamic and eclectic music culture. We will experience the City's Jewish soundscape by visiting various venues and meeting key players in today's music scene, in order to engage in the ongoing dialogues that define Jewishness in New York.

I learned about Jewish Music: the history, the music itself, and what it meant and the time/today

I learned a lot about how to analyze music and how to talk about music in a qualitative way. I learned about the many different aspects of Jewish music in New York. I learned that there is no set definition for what is "Jewish music." Through learning about the different music styles and how they got to NYC, I learned a lot about history. I learned to consider labels and commonly used group terms carefully, and take such labels with a grain of salt (such as "Sephardic"). I learned how to conduct research and write a research paper about music. Also, I learned how to ask questions and make connections about music.

I tell everyone that this has been my favorite course at Columbia so far but I tell them that they should only take it if they LOVE music and have a good ear for it as well as a somewhat strong background in Judaism. It is not necessary to the course but it makes it extremely more enjoyable. Also, there is a 12 page research paper at the end of the semester that some people might find too daunting.

I would recommend this class to anyone interested in music, NYC, Judaism, anthropology, and more. I learned about what "Jewish Music" really is despite my own limited preconception when hearing the phrase and the context that term has in different musical realms and to different communities of people.

I learned broadly about the different kinds of Jewish music in New York and the US (and around the world). We focused on how this music hybridized and transformed over time through different communities.

We learned about the history of Jewish music in Europe and Asia, and its development throughout the world. We looked at how it has manifested in New York City today, and the ways in which its practice is carried on throughout time.

Tools of musical analysis, how to centralize music in cultural movements/settings and use it to form an understanding, how to separate evidence from speculation musically. Also how to meaningfully participate in small discussions.
