I learned so many unexpected things from this course- perhaps most importantly I deepened my appreciation for composition and music. I learned about the differences between the orchestral instruments, music theory, rhythm, composers and history, how to follow a score and better listen, how to identify instruments (that I previously didn't know even existed), different characters of instruments and how they work in an ensemble. I started to learn how to write a score for several instruments in different clefs-something I was always scared of, I learned the role of a conductor and how the same piece can sound completely different depending on so many variants. I listened to so many beautiful pieces that I surely would have died without ever hearing if it wasn't for this class!
How different instruments behave in different ranges along with various techniques of how to integrate/blend them
I think students would be surprised at how little we know about each other as musicians or music appreciators, even those who are in bands or orchestras. This course is also really great for the soul and a reminder to why we love music.

I stretched my ideas of what could be done with different instruments in different periods and deepened my knowledge base about orchestral instruments
Orchestration. Instrumentation. Learned about new pieces and composers.
I mean, I wouldn't recommend it to someone not interested in music or with no musical background (musical background could be playing or listening).
This course broadened my perspective on instrumentation and the effect that the complexity of every instrument/performer has on any music
