Music and Global Africa · Music
I’ve come to truly appreciate music through the lens of active listening. As an avid music lover, I believe that developing the ability to listen closely—paired with critical thinking—is essential in today’s world, where music is both ubiquitous and heavily commodified. It allows us to form thoughtful opinions and engage in more meaningful conversations about the art we consume.
African musical genres, how to analyze music, current and past artists.
This class helped me gain information on numerous cultures around the African Diaspora as well as gain perspective about my place within the greater global community.
I recommend this to anyone who likes music and/or needs a global core! Such an amazing class with great conversations! I learned so much and discovered genres I might have never found without this course. 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Spring 2025 Course: MUSIGU4438_001_2025_1-MusicandGlobalAfrica : MUSIGU4438_001_2025_1 - Music and Global Africa Instructor: Ruth Opara
