We worked through translations of Cicero and Catullus, integrating grammar review throughout.

I learned about the translation of Latin poetry and prose.

I learned numerous grammatical constructions which built upon prior base skills in both Cicero and Catullus and I learned how to perforn scansion and all the nuances which come with Latin poetry.

How the syntax operates in the original text and close reading analyses

I learned how to translate Latin texts (Cicero and Catullus), and also improved and better learned the grammar.

This course improved all aspects of my language skills, but especially uses of cases and clauses.

I learned to think more in Latin, and to internalize the grammatical principles from earlier in Latin. I became much more comfortable with translation, even on just a logistical level (i.e. knowing where to look up words, etc.)

I learned a lot about grammatical style and syntax throughout the late republican period (we did Catullus and Cicero). I learned some light background about each text, and polished my ability to convey Latin prose+verse in comprehensible english.

I learned how to apply my Latin grammar skills to translating Cicero and Catullus passages. I became more comfortable translating and using my memorized vocabulary in context.

Selections from Cicero’s In Verrem were read, as were a selection of Catullus’ Carmina. Grammar review was conducted, both independently and as the texts commanded. Interpretative techniques and cultural practices were occasionally studied.
