Intermediate Greek: Prose · Classics
Through this course I gained the ability to parse larger Greek texts, was made familiar with idiomatic phrases, and how to step beyond the basic translation and think more deeply on the text.
Worked through the entirety of one of Plato's Socratic dialogues with particular emphasis on grammar and construction in Greek, while also engaging in other dialogues and texts in English to provide context. Basic introductions to the apparatus criticus as well as other online tools were also provided.
I learned how to read Plato and Xenophon.
I greatly improved my skills at reading Attic prose texts.
It was tons of fun to read Plato in Greek, especially as I was reading him in English for CC at the same time. It also really helped strengthen my Greek proficiency, especially after not having done it for a year.
I would only recommend this course if you're looking to major in the Classics department. If just for a language requirement, look elsewhere.
How to do a close reading and analyze text in the original language
Get ready to read a lot of Greek! Also, heads up: Plato isn't always too concerned with getting to the point.
Recommend if you went through the first year of the elementary course.
I learned how to become a more detailed reader of Ancient Greek and solidified many concepts I struggled with in Elementary. I became more familiar with Platonic dialogue through reading Crito, and tragic conventions & poetic verse through reading Antigone. In general, this class was also super helpful with my language skills, and continually improved my reading/translation strategies.
