History of the City in Latin America · History
I learned much about the history of Latin American cities from the colonial period to the modern era, in particular the relationship between authorities and regular people, through legal documents etc.
I learned a lot about how cities in Latin America have changed from the colonial period until present day. Specifically, the class focuses on planned aspects of a city versus what the reality of a city is.
I learned about how cities developed after Spanish and Portuguese colonization in Latin America. It was a very colonial perspective. The course allowed me to practice my skills of writing, researching, and critical thinking.
Jay taught all of the content in the readings as well as the theoretical background behind them. I learned about the dynamics of the city and intelletucal thought in latin america from 1500-2000
A lot! The course covers a really big time period, but I think the focus on the city makes the content way more manageable.
I learned about how Latin American cities came to be, starting from colonial rule, and ending in very recent history with the democratization of LATAM cities. This helped me gain a global perspective on how cross oceanic ideas can spread. Furthermore, it opened my eyes to the layout of the 'new world' pre-colonization.
I learned a lot about Latin American from the period of colonization until the early 1900s and redemocratization. The content was really interesting and well put together. I learned about movements, ideologies, specific events, people, places, the general history of the time period.
The reading list was too demanding, and at times the readings would not correlate with lectures. Moreover since we were expected to have done the readings t seemed to me most of the actual learning took place in the books and articles rather than in class.
I would not recommend this course because I feel that it was not critical enough of its colonial perspective.
I will definitely recommend this class to those with keen interests in urban history and latin america.
