Several readings a week + discussion section 2 essays 1 midterm 1 final

Chauncey is great. This class was really wonderful to take -- sometimes I cried in class because of the powerful nature of the lectures, sometimes I laughed so hard because of how funny Chauncey is... great class. His midterm and final were kind of intense, but the TAs graded fairly. There are a fair amount of readings and you have to do them to succeed in discussion section or the tests. The two essays weren't impossible either. I really recommend this if you're queer (or straight) because you learn a lot about your history that you'll have never known!

I learned so much from this course. Throughout my high school career, especially in history classes, it felt that the LGBTQ community and history was glossed over or simply erased, so I really appreciate learning so much from Professor Chauncey.

I not only learned the details of an extremely important part of history that I didn't learn about in regular US history, but a greater knowledge of how American history came to be and just a deeper understanding of this country and politics. I constantly use the information I learned in this class in day-to-day conversations and life and I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to take this course! It also helped me with my personal relationships with parents and the older generation, who I usually get mad at for having rather outdated and homophobic comments. I gained a better understanding as to why they held these beliefs, which made me better able to address what they say with knowledge rather than anger.

I learned about a rich and vibrant history of a marginalized population which is often depicted as having a history of mere misery and hiding. I also learned a lot about how to write history papers and how to take adequate history notes which are new to me as an economics major.

I learned so much. This has been my favorite class that I have legitimately ever taken. I think I found my History concentration through this class. I truly do not have the words to describe how life-changing this class was, is, and will be for my academic career. I think the course is planned perfectly, the assignments all make sense, the tests are reasonable and dare I say...intellectually kind of...fun?!?! I will deeply miss this class when it is over. I wish I could take it again and again.

I already knew quite a bit about gay and lesbian history but Chauncey taught me how to approach that history with the simultaneous respect it deserves and the light-heartedness it can evoke.

This class is incredible. A must take in your time at Columbia, especially if you're gay and even if you're straight. For me, this class put my own life experiences in historical perspective and was empowering and enlightening.

This is an amazing course and I learned wide-ranging lessons about queer history! Professor Chauncey gives an excellent and thorough overview.
