This was my favorite film class at Columbia, and I learned with real-world application and exercise. Arthur is a wonderful professor and makes filmmaking approachable yet challenges our creativity.
I learned a lot in terms of how to direct and how to make good shot choices. I learned how shot choices can inform emotion and the story as much as the script. The key phrase I learned was "form and content."
This class really gave me the space and tools to develop ideas that I only had in my head. It was not overly focused on “quality”, but more the idea, which I was happy about. I experimented with visual storytelling without being afraid of my output, very freeing!
This class is a great examination of directing and it helps one understand filmmaking from new aspects.
