I never thought I'd be interested in documentary filmmaking until I took this course. Wish I'd taken it before my ultimate semester-- it truly informed my understanding of my other film/media classes tremendously.
The Course was incredibly insightful opening doors into the world of Documentary and the idea of "the real" and indexicality in relation to film.
I learned a the major tenets of documentary film and the major movements of documentary history. I also learned the major theories in documentary studies.
I would only recommend the course if the student is very interested in documentary.
Long lectures over zoom are sometimes not the most engaging, but overall this is a minor complaint.
I learned a lot about the misconceptions and development of documentary film.
