So much about the history of film in this time period.

Students learn History of Cinema 1930-1960, after the arrival of sound. The course covers cinema from comprehensive and inclusive perspectives. The focus is on cinema around the world, the development of the industry, technologies, and the art. Invaluable knowledge of a global view of cinema. Added to the lectures, what makes this course particularly powerful is the selection of films being screened (and the historical context around them) and the readings. The readings provide expanded depth into the subject matter.

I learned about the film industry from the 1930s to 1960s

Richard Pena · 2023 · 2023

Professor Pena made a lot of mundane details about cinema in the time period seem fascinating. I learned a ton about world cinemas and Hollywood in the time period. Probably the most interesting and well-taught film course I've taken (as a senior).

Oh Man. Too much. My hands are always sore after a lesson of notes-taking

Richard Pena · 2023 · 2023

This course is tedious, the lectures might as well as been taken straight out of a history textbook, and the strict essay structure which the professor asks for does not encourage students to think freely or interpret the films in their own way.

Richard Pena · 2023 · 2023

recommended for film or history majors. Lots of reading every week and essays once a week

Richard Pena · 2023 · 2023

The only recommendation I would have is instead of writing one shorter essay (900-words approx.) on every film screened in class, perhaps write fewer essays but more in depth.

Richard Pena · 2023 · 2023

The class, topic, and filmography are very interesting, but the class requires weekly papers, and depending on your TA, the grading can be pretty harsh. It is the end of the semester and just got 6 of my grades, I have no idea where they come from / what explains them.

Richard Pena · 2023 · 2023

All the classics are in this period!!! Just gotta do it if you are serious about film
