How to engage with historiography, the question of "what is history", different ways of doing film history
This course is a comprehensive breakdown of film and media the likes of which I've never experienced before. We started by reading wonderful philosophical works about time, culture, and history and progressively merged these concepts into our understanding of media and technology. There's an inherent philosophy to technology that takes on human-like qualities, and this course will make you look at the mechanics of film and theory in ways you've never imagined. I can honestly say that this is the most profound film class I've ever taken.
This was an extremely elucidating course, and I feel like I learned a lot. The readings weren't overbearing and remained compelling, even if they were about subjects and topics I am not personally that interested in. I think I also got a lot of helpful practice with writing and structuring research projects.
How to think about historical studies, timelines, physical media, digital media, sound and more. Forced me to think of things in an unconventional manner and allowed me the liberty to come up with original ideas.
I learned not only the knowledge shown in the syllabus but also the ways of critical thinking and writing.
Lots of theory on challenging traditional cinema history we were taught in undergrad.
While this is a required course for MA students on the cinema history track, it is still a valuable course to take. Learned a lot of useful and critical thinkings and thinking methods.
Prof. Gaines is a very dedicated teacher. And she put in real effort to make sure every one is learning from the curriculum. She also allows us to explore different topics with given methodology. Overall, this is a very helpful course.
