5 "guides", 5 "diaries", a cinema project, a final research essay, a 25-minute group presentation, and homework for each class I spent anywhere from 1 to 15 hours a week for this class; he is a very easy grader if you complete all of the assignments (which there are a lot of) The average on most assignments was 88-98 and the grades increased as the semester progressed.

SPAN UN2103 · Spring 2025

I learned how to speak more confidently and better conduct research in Spanish.

SPAN W3300 · Fall 2024

It's a lot of work, but worthwhile and interesting.

I learned a lot of new verbs in Spanish which was super helpful for me. There were also a bunch of new grammar concepts presented such as nominalization, impersonality, and academic writing, which very interesting to learn about. This class covered topics such as climate change, social media, colonialism, feminism, and empowerment.

This class is a lot of work, but I think it is worth it. My spanish improved in this course more than it had in my previous seven years of taking spanish classes. There is daily homework that is directly relevant to what we do in class that day. The classes consist of short lectures with small group work and seminar-style sharing. Juan Pablo is a very approachable teacher; he held office hours directly after each class for two hours (four hrs/wk) and was very willing to help you with any problems you were having. Multiple points in the semester I went to him with questions about the content or grammar and he offered ample resources and assistance. It sometimes felt like the work for this class was never-ending: as soon as one project was done you should have already started the next one. While it was overwhelming at times, the amount of written assignments greatly improved my written spanish and reading comprehension, and I am very glad to have taken this course.

This course was fantastic because we were able to cover so much material in just a semester. In this class, students will think about medicine through an interdisciplinary lens. They will learn vocabulary that enables them to speak about medical topics, while simultaneously exploring the broader ethical and societal questions that surround the medical field. There will also be an emphasis on learning advanced grammar concepts and writing coherent, cogent papers in Spanish.

Professor Cominguez is the best, definitely take his class if you can!

SPAN UN1102 · Fall 2021

I learned more vocabulary and grammar as well as writing, reading, and speaking skills.

The workload was much more than expected. In one semester, there are 5 Guías de trabajo and 5 Diarios de aprendizaje that can be pretty long. There's two projects and a presentation, and in the end I wrote ~17000 words in Spanish. It's definitely a lot of work, but I suppose it's necessary to learn a language.
