This course was fantastic because we were able to cover so much material in just a semester. In this class, students will think about medicine through an interdisciplinary lens. They will learn vocabulary that enables them to speak about medical topics, while simultaneously exploring the broader ethical and societal questions that surround the medical field. There will also be an emphasis on learning advanced grammar concepts and writing coherent, cogent papers in Spanish.

If you are a pre-med student, I highly recommend this class. It will help you to think through many of the humanitarian questions that are inextricably linked to the practice of medicine. Plus, you're doing this all while learning and practicing your Spanish-speaking skills. 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Fall 2021 Course: SPANUN2103_001_2021_3-INTERMEDSPANII-MEDICAL : SPANUN2103_001_2021_3 - INTERMED SPAN II - MEDICAL Instructor: Juan Cominguez

This class went so far beyond just learning the subjunctive. It appreciated different themes from different aspects of life. Whether that be social, cultural, personal etc. It covered a broad range of topics that all related back to medicine. One aspect I appreciated about the class was the ability to practice medical related Spanish consistently. Having that practice really allowed for me to be involved in the development of my language skills and utilize them outside of the classroom in productive ways.

I enjoyed that this class helped me gain strength in my Spanish overall. As a public health concentrator, I was passionately interested in learning about medicine and doing a deep dive concerning Latino and Hispanic communities and their health profiles.

Juan Cominguez · 2025 · 2025

I learned about healthcare systems and how they affect Latinxs in the US. I also learned more about factors that influence and impact Latinxs and their health. I also learned how to write academically in Spanish.

Juan Cominguez · 2025 · 2025

I reset my comfort level speaking Spanish from about 10% to about 75%. I just helped a lady who just arrived from Ecuador make it to her hotel. I also learned a good deal about medicine and the particular health issues that latin/x people face in the US and across the globe. I feel quite confident in my Spanish writing, and have a good grasp of all the tenses that I need to use to predict, explain, and describe things.
