There was a workbook which we were assigned work each night. Because the class only meets twice a week, it was definitely a little heavier on the homework amount. Luckily, she doesn't check the homework until the day of the final (which for us she cancelled and didn't check our homework).

a presentation about a woman writer/painter in left bank culture (you choose during the first few classes) and a written version of your presentation, participation (mostly based on attendance i think; she does take attendance each class and learns everyone's name pretty fast), an in class written midterm (prompt for my year was you meet a reporter and you have to tell them about what you've learned in the class so far and mention the contributions of 8 women in left bank culture and then propose an article idea), a final paper, and an explication de texte over a reading that you choose to do. some of the readings can be a bit dense but professor suter does a good job at summarizing them in class and talking about them enough that you don't need to understand everything when you read it. also, i think she gives most people A's for the writing assignments except for explication de texte and final papers where she varies the grades but generally I think she's a pretty easy grader.

My pronunciation skills improved and I learned how to speak and write a lot of french which I can use in my daily life. 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Fall 2022 Course: FRENUN1102_003_2022_3-ELEMENTARYFRENCHII : FRENUN1102_003_2022_3 - ELEMENTARY FRENCH II Instructor: Eric Matheis

I find that it is rather difficult in terms of balance in skill level distributed across the class. Although, I find this is common in language classes. 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Spring 2022 Course: FRENUN2101_003_2022_1-INTERMEDIATEFRENCHI : FRENUN2101_003_2022_1 - INTERMEDIATE FRENCH I Instructor: Laurence Marie

Going into this class I was pretty nervous about the jump from elementary french 2 to intermediate french 1. However, Professor Sutor is incredibly kind, understanding, and empathetic. She truly cares about the wellbeing of her students and is almost always willing to make exceptions for the benefit of her students. I cannot recommend taking ANY class with her enough, I promise you will have a good time.

i really enjoyed this class a lot more than the french class i took in the previous semester (composition and conversation with karen santos da silva). professor suter doesn't force students to talk if they don't want to and makes an effort to keep people engaged by cracking some jokes and asking students what their ideas about the readings are. although i wasn't super interested in literary and artistic movements before this class, so i sometimes wouldn't know what my classmates were referencing, i think professor suter does a really good job in making sure that everyone is on the same page as well as making it interesting for people who had never had previous exposure to this type of information. i would recommend taking this class. it's def a more lecture style, which surprised me a bit since my other class was super conversational, but professor suter does have times where she makes you break off into groups to discuss the readings so you can also practice your speaking skills.

Just less assigned homework. If the homework every-night took 10-15 minutes, not 30+ minutes, it would be much more manageable. 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Fall 2021 Course: FRENUN1102_004_2021_3-ELEMENTARYFRENCHII : FRENUN1102_004_2021_3 - ELEMENTARY FRENCH II Instructor: Eric Matheis

Is a lot of work and this class has been very stressful for me. It frustrated me to not live up to my potential despite how much I studied. 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Fall 2021 Course: FRENUN2101_001_2021_3-INTERMEDIATEFRENCHI : FRENUN2101_001_2021_3 - INTERMEDIATE FRENCH I Instructor: Laurence Marie

A 3 page analysis of a text, a presentation (written and visual) on an important historical figure from the period of your choice, one written exam and one end of the semester dissertation, plus weekly reading. The reading is easy to get through, and although this sounds like a lot, it really isn't. Hadley is a fair grader and a very understanding person who will readily accommodate your needs. Take this class!!

She is a phenomenal professor and this is a very interesting course. Mostly discussions with a little bit of lecturing, very interesting and mostly quick content.
