Intro to Audio Storytelling · Writing (School Of The Arts)
What makes a good story, tips for strong writing, engaging the listener, different types of podcasts (ones that go over something 'commonly overlooked,' transgressive, etc.), industry knowledge/advice
I learned a lot about writing for audio and about experimenting with different sounds/voices to create an auditory experience.
I learned how to write for audio, produce a podcast, record speech and "capture" natural sounds. I learned about the different types of podcasts and the art of producing a creative audio product.
In this course I learned to write for audio which is different from other writing I have done before. I also learned to edit audio in Audacity and create dynamic pieces of audio using different voices and sounds. In this course I learned the unique capabilities of audio as a medium to tell stories.
Some script writing. Use of Audacity to edit sound, though this was mostly self taught.
So glad I took this course! Learned so much each step of the podcast process, and feel like I even have a better understanding of the industry too!
I would say that it's a lot of work and moves really fast but is also really fulfilling and will teach you a lot in a short amount of time.
I was disappointed by this course. There was a heavy focus on the production of a specific style of audio story that has a history of making some podcast producers a fair bit of money, and I found that rather distasteful. This felt a lot more like a skill development course in a media or journalism program than a creative writing class. Felt creatively stifled. Also, there was next to no technical training offered. 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Spring 2023 Course: WRITUN3031_001_2023_1-INTROTOAUDIOSTORYTELLING : WRITUN3031_001_2023_1 - INTRO TO AUDIO STORYTELLING Instructor: Mallika Rao
I learned how to identify a story and develop it. I also learned techniques to make an audio story engaging.
Unique strengths of audio as a storytelling platform. Technical and narrative tools necessary to pull off audio storytelling.
