I learned a lot in this course! From a knowledge perspective, I learned much more about the various clinical treatments for a wide range of modern psychopathologies. I also learned more about these various illnesses, their risk-factors, and their symptomatology. For skills, I learned how to read (and close-read) modern-day psychological research and pick-out the most important aspects of sometimes very dense papers. I also learned how to discuss in a group setting modern-day research in using the vocabulary of the field and learning the most pressing issues and contentious debates in the discipline.

Hannah Hoch · 2026 · 2026

I learned lots about specific therapeutic models that have been developed for common but under-discussed topics that might arise in therapy.

This course is fascinating and really introduces you to the current questions and research approaches in psychology and the discussions which are happening in the literature. Moreover, Dr. Barahmand is an incredible Professor and someone who is a joy to study under. I recommend this course wholeheartedly! 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Spring 2024 Course: PSYCUN3623_001_2024_1-TOPICSINCLINICALPSYCHOLOGY : PSYCUN3623_001_2024_1 - TOPICS IN CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY Instructor: Usha Barahmand

We learned a lot about different therapeutic approaches (especially family and couple therapy) in the context of different mental disorders. I thought it was really cool that we got to try out one of the therapy styles as our midterm assignment.
