Learned about the history and politics of Brazil while incorporating questions of race, gender, sexual orientation, and class (Who is telling the story? Why are certain works consider seminal over others?)
I learned a lot about the historical events, movements, and ideas, particularly in areas of cultural production, that contributed to the development of Brazilian society and civilization as a contemporary nation. I gained key insight into aspects of Brazilian society, and the impact of political, economic, social factors, both domestic and abroad, on its development.
The formation of Brazilian national identity, culture and image.
I learned a handful of Portuguese words as well as a lot of the history of Brazil.
Topics of Brazilian history from the Portuguese invasion up to the current time period. We surveyed broad themes that remain relevant in discourse about Brazilian society and culture. I learned a lot of interesting things about our modern world in general outside of Brazil, including topics like decolonization and feminism.
I gained a great perspective on Brazilian history and culture of today, especially from the lens of cannibalism and gender/sexuality. Both, as I've come to learn, are extremely pertinent to Brazil throughout its history, even before colonization. I feel much more informed from a country that's often excluded from discussions of Latin America for the sin of not speaking Spanish, disqualifying it from being Hispanic.
Professor Nemi Neto was amazing!! He made the class so fun.
I would recommend this class both for the material, the format, and the instructor. All three of them made this semester a positive experience for me, and I would definitely recommend anyone with even a slight interest in Brazil to take it, whatever form that interest takes. Students are encouraged to participate and even attend events related to the class outside of teaching hours.
