Elementary Persian I · Middle Eastern, South Asian, And African Studies
In terms of material, I learned the Persian alphabet, basic grammar and conjugations, a good amount of vocabulary, and decent conversational Farsi. I particularly appreciated this course as a non-Farsi speaking Iranian.
The basics of Farsi alphabet, vocabulary, and syntax.
This class teaches you formal Persian. it WILL NOT teach your convorsational Persian. However, Saeed does go into some fun culture facts which was a nice touch. Also, he loosens up a bit after the first month or so. Just show him that you're serious and care.
I'd particularly recommend this course to Iranian students/heritage speakers.
Take if you really are passionate about learning Farsi. 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Fall 2021 Course: MDESUN1701_001_2021_3-ELEMENTARYPERSIANI : MDESUN1701_001_2021_3 - ELEMENTARY PERSIAN I Instructor: Saeed Honarmand
persian alphabet, basic grammar, basic vocab
I learned how to read and write in Persian, as well as the language's basic grammatical structure, fundamental conjugation, and introductory vocabulary.
I learned the alphabet/ how to write in Farsi, many new vocabulary words and pronunciation / spelling.
Professor Honarmand is a great Farsi teacher, and I think he adjusts his instruction based on the starting place of each student. He never makes people feel bad for answering things incorrectly or asking questions, and I think he helps take away a lot of the nerves that come naturally with a foreign language class. 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Fall 2022 Course: MDESUN1701_001_2022_3-ELEMENTARYPERSIANI : MDESUN1701_001_2022_3 - ELEMENTARY PERSIAN I Instructor: Saeed Honarmand
I felt I learned this Persian language in an organic way -- not learning by simply memorizing numbers and words, but by learning the alphabet from the start.
