“Game of Thrones”: On Epics and Empires · Middle Eastern, South Asian, And African Studies
How to correlate different classical texts to modern texts and cinema
I learned a great deal about epics and empires. That might sound like a cop out or a joke considering the title of the course, but honestly, that element of the curriculum was very strong.
empires and epics - persian empire, roman empire, etc. Game of thrones topics - characters, landscapes, etc
Dude this class is so ridiculous it's awesome. I'm pre med and taking it for global core and it's so unlike my other classes and a great way to stretch my brain. Professor Dabashi has some really far-out thoughts in his analysis and intellectualization of GoT, but very thought-provoking and interesting.
We learned about Game of Thrones and how it relates to epics and empires throughout time and how itself it is an epic
Read and analyzed great texts on empires and epics. Analyzed Game of Thrones through the lens of those works.
I learned a lot about epics and empires. More specifically, I learned more about the role that epics and narrative play in shaping the founding of an empire. I learned a great deal about the American empire whilst learning a lot about the show itself—Game of Thrones (it was my first time watching the show when I took this class). I believe I have also been able to hone/sharpen my critical thinking skills; reading the various assigned texts and contextualizing them with the show I was watching felt like a huge step outside my comfort zone at the beginning, but I eventually became more confident and comfortable in doing so. The lectures were very engaging and impressive to me given the number of concepts and ideas that I learned by listening to my peers and instructor.
How to analyze game of thrones, connections between empire building in history and in game of thrones
I'm not entirely sure: the class discussed a broad array of themes related to epics and general story creation. We discussed a number of important texts and movies while also analyzing scenes from Game of Thrones in class.
I sharpened my analysis skills and learned a lot about different empires throughout world history, real and fictional.
