The course helped me feel more comfortable reading Sanskrit kavya and also understand and engage with Sanskrit poetics. Overall, my proficiency in reading and my understanding of prosody and poetic devices has greatly been enhanced by this course. I learned a lot fo Sanskrit vocabulary. I feel more comfortable reading texts with ṣleśa and with longer compounds (two difficulties of mine). I also feel I have a better understanding of the history of Sanskrit literature, and I could better learn about this history for myself in the future.
Tyler’s method is organized, fair, rigorous and fun! I loved learning about the names and functions of krt suffixes especially!
I learned valuable skills improving my translation and interpretation of Sanskrit texts, spanning both technical practice of grammatical analysis and prosody, as well as critical approaches to literary theory and aesthetics. This course expanded my familiarity with key works of classical Sanskrit literature, allowing me to learn new approaches in breaking down and analyzing diverse language across varied literary styles and subject matter. Additionally, each class reading taught me nuanced methods in working with texts and collaborating with others.
Metrical analysis (how to identify different meters), commentarial services (learning how to read the metalanguage of commentaries that form a crucial part of Sanskrit scholarship), grammatical skills (compound analysis, derivations of primary derivational nominals)
I developed skills in engaging with various types of Sanskrit texts, with particular attention to poetic devices
I would only recommend for someone who has the time and who really wants to know Sanskrit.
This is an incredible course for engaging with classical Sanskrit literature, and will surely appeal to any students' individual interests.
