History of South Asia I · Middle Eastern, South Asian, And African Studies
This course generally broadened my horizons a lot. Even though it was a class in South Asian history, the professor interweaved modern discussions of colonialism and politics to make the class relevant to today. I didn't come in knowing what South Asia even was and now I'm leaving with a lot of really cool and new insights for how to view history and how to critically think about sources.
Many themes and historical elements of South Asia
I learned a totally new way to look at history and to questions things more often. It brought me to the idea that everything is intentional and the meaning is very subtle and hidden in plain sight.
I learned more about historical methodology and how to analyze and think critically about history. I think this was my biggest takeaway from the class, and it was very stimulating in terms of academic engagement.
I learned a new perspective of studying history. I learned about history through different themes. I learned to analyze the primary sources through the lens of themes.
This class has an incredible ability to teach critical thinking and an extremely in-depth way of looking at the past that both gives information about South Asia and the wider world as well.

I learned about a decolonial approach to history. Specifically, by looking at the subcontinent of South Asia. I learned how to apply different lenses to various forms of primary sources to better understand their social function, audience, purpose, and so on. I learned that historical events do not happen in a vacuum and are often much more connected than we think. I also learned that the divisions we believed to be present, say among Hindus and Muslims, were not really present until colonial rule began. Ultimately, I learned a ton about a new approach to history that I will certainly use outside of the course.
