Mobility and Identity in the Roman World · History
I learned a lot Roman history as well as evaluating Anicent primary sources, making historical arguments, and applying theoretical frameworks to the study of mobility.
I have never studied Roman history before, so I learned a lot about both the Roman world and how to conduct research with extremely limited sources!
This course is fantastic! Professor Ramgopal chose very interesting and engaging articles that facilitated great class discussions. Her guest lecturer during the semester also added a breadth to what we were studying and really made me want to know more about the field at large. Additionally our library meting at Burke was a great educational tool for our research papers and it peaked my interest in the rare materials housed at Columbia. I came into this class only knowing the basics about Roman history, but I have a much better understanding of Roman history now, and I also learned some valuable things about how to do historical research and write a history paper.
All about the intersection of PHYSICAL mobility (not social or economic as I thought going in) and marginalized identities (ie. enslaved people, women, non-Romans) in the Roman world.
Again, super enjoyable and interesting just quite difficult.
Learned about mobility and identity in many different contexts throughout Ancient Rome and Ancient Mediterranean
I learned about how identity in the Roman world informed how different groups of people were allowed or forced to move by examining both primary and secondary sources.
Roman colonization and the impacts on the mobility of Roman and non-Roman populations, some history of roman slavery and its implications for mobility, women and children in ancient Rome and their mobility This class also had some of the best skill building for writing and academic research I've had at Columbia.
Some knowledge of Roman History will help you to feel more confident, but it's also not necessary and Prof. makes it very accessible for those unfamiliar with that history.
