History of NYC from pre-colonial times to the present.

I learned so much in this class! I feel much more well versed in NYC history, considering I knew basically nothing prior to this course. The course begins with the Lenape and goes up until about 9/11. Though we moved quickly, I gained a solid amount of knowledge and Professor Phillips-Fein is really good at filling the lectures with a lot of information but not making it feel rushed or overwhelming. I will say that there's an insane amount of reading; I think we had to purchase around 11 books which was 1) expensive but also 2) unattainable to thoroughly finish each assigned reading every week unless this is your only class with reading. As an English major, it definitely got tricky to juggle the readings with my other class work.

Learning about the history of new york starting with the Lenape people/first settlers all the way to occupy wall street and the covid pandemic in 2020.

I learned about the history of the city of New York and furthered my understanding of this urban space and its history.

Learned a lot about the city's complex political and cultural history, from the 18th century to the present.

I learned so much in this course about the founding of the New Amsterdam colony by the Dutch, the history and displacement of the Munsee peoples, the British colony, racial tensions in the city, civil rights, political radicalisms in the city, cultural moments/icons, architecture... the list goes on! Plus, Professor Phillips Fein is a brilliant economic historian of the city, so her unit/book on the 1970s fiscal crisis is an extremely interesting angle in the class (I am not typically drawn to economics at all, but Professor Phillips-Fein writes and speaks about it in an incredibly engaging way).

New York City history, broader historical themes in the United States.

I learned so much about New York from so many perspectives -- urban planning, architecture, housing, cultural institutions, music, art, education, politics, economics, trade, industry, geography, immigration/migration, transportation, policing, social organizing, and more! As someone who is a migrant to the city, I felt very enriched by the narratives of the past presented in this course and find my experiences moving about the city now so much more enriching because I have more context on the reasons why New York exists as it does in the present.

A comprehensive history of the NYC that focused on thematic ideas. It was veyr interesting, disgestable, and well structured.

I learned a lot about New York City and different perspectives
