Drama, Theatre and Theory · English And Comparative Literature
I learned about the evolution and different perspectives of dramatic theory, as well as how to read plays through these theories.
In Drama, Theatre and Theory, we read and digested the progression of plays throughout history in tandem with many different writers on the topic of drama and theatre.
The class uses the theatre as a point of departure but extends far beyond that - it is a class about theoretical frameworks and how we use them to see the world. The dangers of getting trapped by particular frames of mind and how this hampers our vision.
This course has made me think in ways that I have not thought before, truly engaging my critical thinking skills.
Can't recommend this class enough; I've talked my friends' ears off about this class.
Professor Quigley's classes have been the highlights of my collegiate academic experience. Professor Quigley is a brilliant theorist in his own right, and never fails to spark my curiosity about a theorist, play, or playwright any given week. He is eager to meet in office hours (and will speak at length with any student); he gives substantial feedback on papers. I could not recommend this course or his Ibsen/Pinter more highly. 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Fall 2021 Course: ENTAUN3701_001_2021_3-DRAMA,THEATREANDTHEORY : ENTAUN3701_001_2021_3 - DRAMA, THEATRE AND THEORY Instructor: Austin Quigley
We were exposed to a range of plays and their historical/cultural contexts, the theories surrounding drama, and the ways in which dramatic literature and theory interact
This course changed my life. I am now much more observant as it pertains to all aspects of the theatre, understanding the purpose of every element curated for the stage.
Professor Quigley could be teaching any course on Drama and I would be the first to sign up. He is the most brilliant Professor I know and he is such a joy to learn from. The course IN ALL CASES is only as good as the individual teaching it. 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Fall 2022 Course: ENTAUN3701_001_2022_3-DRAMA,THEATREANDTHEORY : ENTAUN3701_001_2022_3 - DRAMA, THEATRE AND THEORY Instructor: Austin Quigley
This was my favorite class this semester, and I have already recommended it and Professor Quigley's spring seminar to several friends.
