I learned much about the Asian American canon of literature. I learned about literary theory that is directly applicable to readings and real world experiences. I learned a lot about various transpacific immigration histories.
Survey on Asian American literature and history, especially Filipino history. I learned about the word FORM and what people mean when they say things like formal argument, which was helpful in general. I learned about the form of the personal essay in Asian American literature. So many useful and canonical Asian American texts! There need to be more classes on Asian American literature at this school. The secondary readings were also fire and well-chosen bits of Asian American literary criticism.
I learned about the long, robust history of Asian American history while learning about the theoretical frameworks that often prop up the presence of the Asian- American identity within literature.
We read 10 or so really crucial literary texts in Asian American literary history and also theory texts that broke down how we can think about them. I learned a good solid history of Filipino and Chinese migrant workers in the US, and how writers in the 60-80's understood and wrote about that. The form of the essay was broken down.
as someone studying asian literature, it was incredibly difficult to find asian courses. not only did i find this course, but it truly, truly exceeded my expectations. for so long throughout my academic career i learned a lot about east asian history, but what's also crucial is learning about asian american history. before this course, i only knew amy tan (shame). i never knew the names maxine hong kingston or frank chin, some of the biggest names in asian american literary criticism - something i only now am privileged to know because of this course. i think professor rodriguez is just the right person to teach this course and would recommend it to anyone needing to fulfill an asian literature requirement for EALAC (columbia)/AMEC (barnard). i really hope, for the sake of future students, that this course is taught again by someone, if not by professor themselves, just as capable and knowledgeable as them.

This has been my favorite class ever. The subject matter, professor, environment, and pacing are one of the best I've ever experienced.
