The biggest transferable skill I'm taking away from this course is literature and poetry analysis. I think I'm a more thoughtful and questioning reader now - also, of course, I have a much greater appreciation for Chaucer and the extent of his contributions to the history of English literature.

Middle English, historical context, Boethian Philosophy, and many literary experiments Chaucer put forward.

I learned a tremendous about The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer, Medieval literature, frame tale narratives, and how it is possible for a collection of literature to cover so much variety and experimentation. This was also followed with a lot of attention to detail in close reading and analysis of tales in order to make arguments and meanings.

We covered the entire Canterbury Tales and learned the sociocultural background behind the work.

I learned how to interpret The Canterbury Tales and I learned a lot about the cultural context in which the Tales were written.

I learned to differentiate the narrative's base meaning from its interpretive meaning, from the pilgrim's intentions from the pilgrim's psychology, from Chaucer's grand orchestration. There are too many layers of meaning. I also learned how a narrative can serve as a writer's practice of literary theory.

All about the history and content of the Canterbury Tales

The content itself was interesting alone, but Professor Johnson made the class. She was really engaging and enthusiastic, and her knowledge and opinions on the text felt refreshing and not stuffy, which I think some Medieval English classes can be sometimes. I definitely recommend taking it with her.

This class is excellent. Professor Johnson's lectures are a treat. I definitely came out of this class with a greater appreciation for literature generally and the Canterbury Tales specifically.

This class is fun and thought-provoking, Professor Johnson's energy WILL bring you closer to the text and the fascinating world of Chaucerian language and literary experiment.
